Making My Own Midi Controller Part 3: Layout

So this is the layout I’ve decided on.  I have a cigar box that just happens to be the right size.  Although I like how the box looks on its own, I’m considering getting some Plasti Dip  spray and covering the whole box with it.  I think a matte, rubberized finish would go way better with the red glowing buttons and knobs.  Maybe I figure out a way to show some of the cigar box through the Plasti Dip…or just get some of the clear version of it.

These circuit boards proved to be a little less straightforward than I was hoping but I think that just has to do with my lack of electronics experience.  Luckily, Travis over at Livid Instruments helped me out by giving me a step by step way to wire the boards the way I want them.  I like getting such personalized support…definitely going to be continuing to use Livid’s stuff because of it.

Any way, the layout is inspired by my needs in working with Ableton Live in a live situation.  At home I use a Novation Launchpad  and a Novation Remote SL controller. I love the remote but I can’t put it in my backpack and I just feel weird and redundant about buying a Remote Zero.  I really like how the knobs are set up on the remote and I wanted a way to take that concept and make it myself.  The top row of buttons and knobs will be scripted to control whatever I have selected at the time and the bottom row of buttons and knobs will control global effects.

Next is soldering it up.  Whew!  Wish me luck.
